"All work was of very high standards, in strict compliance with construction documents, on or ahead of schedule, and typically with some cost savings to the Authority...." —Jim Mihalik, Construction Director, Roanoke Redevelopment and Housing Authority

Projects: Industrial

Norfolk Southern Expedited Maintenance Facility

The new NS Expedited Maintenance Facility has railroad tracks running through the building and along the exterior of the building to allow employees to service and maintain locomotives both inside and outside of the facility. The 6,000 square foot metal building structure has a service pit and elevated platforms to allow mechanics access to the top and bottom of the locomotives. To build the elevated platforms, the project began with the coordination of complicated multi-tiered, concrete foundations. Once the platforms were constructed, removable handrails were installed as part of the metal platforms to help in the performance of the work. The addition of a five-ton crane assists in the moving of heavy train parts and equipment. Extensive piping was installed to accommodate lube oil, journal oil, compressor oil and waste oil in the maintenance and operation of the equipment. A roof access ladder gives entry to the roof walkway.

Boxley New Crushing Facility

This new facility tripled the production capacity of the original. A fast track project, the scope of work included the installation of concrete piers for conveyor systems and crushing stations, and a 40-foot tall, 4-feet thick and 200-foot-long concrete retaining wall. To facilitate the speed of the project, Breakell Inc. built a weather shelter allowing the crew not to miss a day of pouring concrete due to inclement weather during the winter. Project was coordinated and completed without interruption to Boxley’s current production.
