Burrell Center Renovations

The former Burrell Hospital, a 120,000 sf, six-floor building, was renovated for Blue Ridge Behavioral Healthcare to house all of its adult outpatient services as well as administrative offices.  As an historic landmark, construction on the building required the preservation of the façade, fire doors between wings, and the terrazzo floors and the entrance taken back to its original design. The interior was taken down to the support structure and then all new finishes, a EPDM roof, mechanical, electrical, and sprinkler systems were installed. A new parking design in the front and additional employee parking in the back were part of the plans.  For historical value the exterior windows were kept intact, but new windows were installed inside for energy efficiency.  The conference room on the first floor was refurbished with new custom wood panels and casework reproduced to match the original woodwork.  The lobby area was restored as a museum to honor the legacy of the former hospital for the black community.
