Featured Projects

Carilion RCH 5th & 6th Floor Renovations

Renovations to the fifth and sixth floors of Carilion’s Roanoke Community Hospital created new classrooms and a variety of laboratories for the Jefferson College of Health Sciences.  As the construction manager, Breakell Inc. oversaw the demolition of both floors and began the process of reconfiguring the area to meet the educational needs of the students.  Biomedical research laboratories, operating room laboratories, a physical therapy laboratory, occupational therapy laboratory, classrooms and some common areas now occupy the approximately 75,000 square feet.  Supporting these research and teaching laboratories are very complex mechanical and lab exhaust systems.

West Creek Manor

West Creek Manor, a multi-family residential complex, received major renovations throughout a five-phase construction process.  Twenty-four buildings with eight apartments in each building were modernized with new plumbing, double-hung windows and energy-efficient SEER 14 HVAC systems.  New carpet and vinyl flooring were installed throughout the apartments with new drywall hung as needed. Skim coat plaster was applied to all drywall surfaces. The kitchens were updated with new appliances, fixtures, cabinets and countertops.  Breakell Inc. also renovated Building 410 creating a community room for use by the residents, new management offices, a model apartment and four apartments that were designed and modified to meet ADA standards.   The exterior of the buildings had new gutters and downspouts installed along with new vinyl soffits in the breezeway areas. The sidewalks were repaired and updated to improve handicap accessibility.

Miller’s Hill

The Miller’s Hill project is a collaboration between the Roanoke Redevelopment and Housing Authority, Breakell Inc. and Hill Studio to revitalize 17 homes in the 400 block of Day Ave.  The goal is to preserve the historic character of the homes while transforming each one back into a single-family dwelling.  Each home is being equipped with energy-saving features including Energy Star rated appliances, spray foam insulation, light fixtures, insulated glass in the windows and a hot water recirculation pump.  Each kitchen is being designed with all modern amenities including granite countertops, custom-made solid wood cabinets and ceramic tile floors.
